about

...and so was my "Mario Bay Breeze" track, so what a great segue by chance. Now, I have always loved 'Dire, Dire Docks' from "Super Mario 64" from the first time I heard it back in 1996 when the Nintendo 64 came out. I remember going to my friend Duncan's house and we played the game for... 8 hours straight or something ridiculous. And this was the first time I had ever heard environmental changes in music. Swimming around would play the theme, going deeper would add strings, and jumping on land would add a nice drum beat to the track. That's part of the reason it always stood out to me. Anyway, at one point, mellogear was assigned to work on this album and to re-arrange his 'Goomba Goes Beach' arrangement of 'Dire, Dire Docks' for this 'Nintendo' album. He was kinda stuck since he had already done it, and I wanted to get a fresh arrangement working with him because I love his sound. But one Summer night when The OneUps sax player, Anthony Lofton, needed to crash at my house, he arrived around two in the morning and I was trying to work on this track. Somehow in the following two hours we had gone from nothing to this arrangement and it was a total blast. Anthony had the sound I was looking for and we just went crazy with it. He did the EP and the performed the piano part and I did the percussion and the bass. We threw everything else in there, and I managed to top it off with my 'singing' sea gulls and it was the icing on the cake. Definitely my favorite arrangement of this track to date, even though it's a couple of years old. And the fact that Anthony and I play a totally different arrangement with The OneUps that is also amazingly satisfactory - well, it just goes to show the diversity I guess. I'm glad to be a part of both.
